Scheduled for the 2012 – 2013 academic year in locations across Canada, these Royal Conservatory teacher Professional development seminars will focus on student-centred learning. Student-centred learning is based on respect for the unique personality and learning style of every student and a belief that the value of allowing students the freedom to explore will enhance their engagement and motivation for music study.

Fostering Student Motivation and IdentityDr. Jennifer Snow
Building a sense of ownership and personal connection with music is one of the essential tasks of music teachers, and the key to student success. By using a wide range of creative approaches to develop and increase student engagement, teachers can instill and nurture a life-long passion for music. This session will explore innovative ideas on how to increase motivation, inspire effective practicing, and encourage self-directed learning. Ideas on how to engage parental support and inspire student ownership will also be highlighted.
Building a healthy technique and body awarenessDr. Kent McWilliams
At the core of successful and satisfying music making is the challenge of creating an effective and comfortable physical approach to the instrument. This interactive session will include activities with “hands-on” solutions to the most significant technical challenges faced by developing pianists. Areas to be covered include building a healthy technique from the beginning, understanding individual biomechanics, and practical approaches to achieving control of sound quality and fluency. With a well-coordinated technique students are free to engage their musical sensitivities, explore new ideas and concepts, and expand their musical horizons.
Engaging adult learnersDr. Janet Lopinski
There is a growing appreciation for the value and benefits of music study for mature students. This session will provide effective strategies and methods for working with adult learners and explore approaches to support adult learning styles. Learn more about how to facilitate the needs of adult students with setting appropriate goals, overcoming technical challenges, engaging individual motivation and exploring diverse teaching material. Experience creative activities for successfully engaging and inspiring adult learners who are part of the largest growing market of music students. Also included in this collaborative session are insights into facilitating the performance experience for adults who desire accreditation through examinations.
