About This Event

Iconic South African jazz instrumentalists reunite and perform on the same stage after almost 60 years – they last appeared together in 1960 at the State Theatre in Pretoria during the country’s first Freedom Day celebrations. The bohemian bebop ensemble was “a group of musicians who were obviously in love with the American modern jazz of artists such as Thelonious Monk, Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker and John Coltrane, but also beginning to forge a more distinctively South African sound which they would develop as individual artists over the coming decades.” (AllMusic) With Hugh Masekela on trumpet, Abdullah Ibrahim on piano, and his band Ekaya, the evening will feature music from their seminal Jazz Epistles recording - the first album recorded by a black South African band - Jazz Epistle, Verse 1, alongside music from each of the artist’s illustrious careers in the following years.
