About This Event

“Jelly & George” is a tribute to jazz pioneers Jelly Roll Morton and George Gershwin, featuring the fresh perspectives of American jazz pianist/composer Aaron Diehl, described by The New York Times as “melodic precision, harmonic erudition, and elegant restraint” and as “an embodiment of jazz historicism at its most earnest and refined".

Diehl is joined by the extraordinary 2016 Grammy-winning vocalist, Cécile McLorin Salvant, who made her Canadian debut in Koerner Hall in 2013 with Ramsey Lewis. Of Cécile McLorin Salvant, Ben Ratliff writes in The New York Times “she sings clearly, with her full pitch range, from a pronounced low end to full and distinct high notes, used sparingly [...] Her voice clamps into each song, performing careful variations on pitch, stretching words but generally not scatting; her face conveys meaning, representing sorrow or serenity like a silent-movie actor.” Essence Magazine raves, “The bespectacled, always stylish and sometimes theatrical Cécile Mclorin Salvant is a jazz phenom with a voice that we guarantee will subdue you.” And The Guardian sums it up: “Salvant can warble in French and growl her way through old blues belters, but she’s even better at recasting standards.”

Performers include:
Aaron Diehl, piano
Cécile McLorin Salvant, vocals
Adam Birnbaum, piano
Paul Sikivie, bass
Lawrence Leathers, drums
Corey Wilcox, trombone
Evan Christopher, clarinet
