About This Event

The second performance in our Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan 90th birthday concert series.

Chicago composer, pianist, and jazz legend Ramsey Lewis walked the same streets, breathed the same air, and went to the same school of gospel/blues/jazz as Dinah Washington. An iconic leader in the contemporary jazz movement for over 50 years, with three Grammy Awards and seven gold records to his credit, Lewis recently released his 80th collection of songs. “Lewis’ commercial successes should not be viewed as a liability to his legacy in jazz history. Lewis is one of the great musicians of his generation, and just as Ornette Coleman has, he’s carved out his own singular voice that he has innovated and adapted with creative success for over half a century.” (The New York Times)

French-American jazz singer Cécile McLorin Salvant is the 2010 winner of the Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition. “Cecile McLorin Salvant’s voice is like a visit from an old friend; there is no doubt that she is viewed as a modern day Ella Fitzgerald, Betty Carter and Bessie Smith all rolled into one. At just 23 years old … her voice packs a powerful punch replete with flawless phrasing, an incredible knack for story telling and this amazing way in which she scats with playful innocence.” (Ashabrodiejazz)

JAZZ.FM91 host Dani Elwell will join us live on stage to emcee this performance.
