If you missed the suspenseful and exhilarating 2016 Banff International String Quartet Competition, this is your opportunity to hear the program that captured first prize for Canada’s own Rolston String Quartet. Join the members of this outstanding ensemble, who are now touring internationally, as they once again perform their superb, competition-winning program. First up is Ravel’s sole excursion into the string quartet medium, a typically elegant and beautifully cultivated creation. This wonderful piece by Beethoven is the second of the three Quartets that he composed on commission for Count Andrey Razumovsky, the longtime Russian ambassador to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Count gave Beethoven a number of Russian folk songs and requested that he make use of them in these Quartets. Beethoven did so, not in direct, unadorned terms but with typical ingenuity. A Quartet by the gifted, highly imaginative Canadian composer Zosha Di Castri rounds out the bill.
