with Daniel Levitin and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony
8:00 PM
Koerner Hall
Daniel Levitin, author of the best-selling books This Is Your Brain on Music and The World In Six Songs, has performed with Sting, cracked jokes with Robin Williams, and been heard on the CBC, NPR, and at Google HQ. Together with conductor Edwin Outwater, they explore what happens to your brain when it comes into contact with Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. You will find out what is going on in the mind of the conductor, the musicians, and the audience (you!) in this interactive presentation. With live audience surveys using the latest technology, this will be a Beethoven experience that you will never forget!
From Daniel Levitin:
"This show represents a first-of-its kind partnership between an orchestra, conductor, and neuroscientist. Together, we hope to explain and demonstrate what goes on in our brains, our hearts, and our bodies when we listen to great music. Working closely with Edwin has been an incredible experience. He possesses great depth of knowledge and insight, not just into the music, but into the process of turning the notes on the page into authentic human emotions. When I listen to Beethoven, I'm overwhelmed by the sense of unfolding inevitability in the music - that each note completely predicts what will come next, and references what has come before. We'll discuss why this happens, both musically and neurologically. After 20 years of research, I've come to believe that humans are a highly musical species, and that our brains are literally wired to absorb, produce and appreciate music. I'll review some of the evidence that has led me to this belief. The evening is designed for people of any age and any musical background, from first-time symphony goers to veterans. "
From Edwin Outwater:
"There are so many ways to experience Beethoven, and that's what makes this music wonderful. Working with Daniel on this project has given me a new perspective on listening to and interpreting the messages and signals of this music. Daniel and I have gone beyond the intellectual layer we have traditionally imposed on this music, and its status as a "work of art," an "object." Beethoven's Fifth Symphony is not something that is, it's something that does. It communicates with us on a primal evolutionary level, and emits a dynamic sequence of signals and messages, and connectors that are more basic than words. They activate responses that are hard-wired into our body and connect us to the composer, and to each other. In other words, we're saying that no knowledge or education is required to experience Beethoven. You just have to feel it."
