Bach: Partita No. 1 for Violin Solo in B Minor, BWV 1002
Ysaÿe: Sonata No. 3 for Violin Solo in D Minor, “Ballade”
Barrie Cabena: Sonatina No. 4 for Violin Solo, Op. 375, “In Homage to J.S. Bach” (world premiere)
Bach: Partita No. 2 for Violin Solo in D Minor, BWV 1004

There is nothing more demanding for violinists than an entire program of unaccompanied music. Canadian superstar James Ehnes is more than equal to the task because, as The Times of London has written, he produces “…playing of phenomenal control, allied to musicianship of the highest order.” Bookending his Festival recital are two of the glorious Partitas by Johann Sebastian Bach. The D Minor concludes with the astonishing Chaconne, a ferociously demanding 15-minute colossus. Seeking to create a contemporary equivalent to Bach’s unaccompanied violin works, Belgian violinist and composer Eugene Ysaÿe  created six incredible Sonatas. James Ehnes performs the third of them, a kaleidoscopic and enormously virtuosic piece in one movement. The prolific Australian-born Canadian composer Barrie Cabena is represented by one of his Sonatinas.
